Acne Scars Treatments

What Are Acne Scars and What Causes Them?

Acne scars are the result of inflammation of acne blemishes. When acne breakouts penetrate the skin, they damage it and the tissue beneath it. As the acne heals, your skin’s response to this damage is to produce collagen to heal the tissue. If your body produces too much or too little collagen trying to heal the skin tissue, scarring can occur. If your body produces too much collagen, you may develop a raised acne scar. If your body produces too little collagen, you may be left with a small indentation or pit in the skin known as a depressed acne scar. The size and severity of the scar depend on your unique body and collagen production. Acne scars can be caused by inflammatory acne, picking, popping, and squeezing acne, or can even be genetic.

Pockmarks

Pockmarks are usually caused by chicken pox, staph infections, old acne marks, or other infections that affect the skin. Unlike acne scarring, pockmarks are usually deep and dark, with a concave shape that won’t go away on its own. Pockmarks can cause the skin to have a very uneven texture and appearance.

Genius RF Microneedling

Genius RF Microneedling is a minimally invasive procedure that uses a combination of radiofrequency energy and microneedling to penetrate deep into the skin to stimulate collagen production and improve the appearance of acne scars. This treatment is safe and effective, and results in improved skin texture and tone, as well as a reduction in the appearance of acne scars. This is a great option for minor and surface level scarring.

LaseMD Ultra Skin Resurfacing

LaseMD Ultra Skin Resurfacing is a state-of-the-art laser treatment that uses advanced technology to penetrate deep into the skin to improve the appearance of acne scars. The laser energy stimulates collagen production and remodels the skin, resulting in improved skin texture and tone, as well as a reduction in the appearance of acne scars. This treatment is safe and effective, and requires no downtime, making it a popular choice for those looking for a quick and easy way to improve the appearance of acne scars.  This is also the better option for treating deeper scars.

Safety Considerations

While all of our acne scarring treatments are extremely safe and effective, there are some things you should consider before treatment.

Genius RF Microneedling

If you are taking or have taken Accutane, have a skin infection, have a significant skin disease like psoriasis, you’re taking anticoagulants, are pregnant, or undergoing chemotherapy, micro-needling is contraindicated.  The treatment is effectively very controlled and specific stress and damage to the skin that makes it healthier in the long run.  So if you have a compromised immune system, your blood doesn’t clot, or you have difficulty healing from minor, superficial skin damage, micro-needling is not a good choice for you.

Be sure to protect your skin for several days after treatment with sunscreen, and avoid wearing makeup for at least 24 hours after treatment to allow your skin to recover.

LaseMD Ultra

If you’re already prone to acne or another facial skin problem, a resurfacing laser can trigger a flare-up. This may be because the laser is stimulating your skin cells directly.  While this makes them produce more collagen, it also stimulates their general metabolism so that an existing metabolic imbalance can worsen. Consult with your dermatologist before trying a resurfacing laser if you’re prone to acne or facial skin problems.

Carbon Laser Facial

The Spectra laser system is very gentle and safe with little or no downtime. Most of our clients feel no need to rest or recover at all and go about the rest of their day normally.  For some with exceptionally sensitive skin, there may be a sensation similar to a very mild sunburn.  As usual, we suggest you make sure to use sunscreen for a few days on the treated area, just to make sure that your skin heals completely and quickly.

Maximizing Results

Be sure to protect your skin for several days after treatment with sunscreen, and avoid wearing makeup for at least 24 hours after treatment to allow your skin to recover. Genius RF Microneedling and LaseMD Ultra will need an initial session followed by maintenance sessions to achieve the best results.

FAQ

How effective is acne scar treatment?

Our laser and microneedling treatments are extremely effective in targeting scarring. Our acne scar treatments stimulate the production of collagen and new skin cells and remove impurities while being gentle on your skin. These treatments work from the inside out, going deep into your pores where topical treatments fail.

How many sessions will I need?

Typically, we recommend 3 treatments 6 to 8 weeks apart for Genius RF microneedling, 3 treatments 3-5 weeks apart for LaseMD, and treatments spaced several weeks apart for Carbon Laser Facial. However, everyone’s skin is different, and our expert clientele at Meg & Co. are happy to discuss a treatment plan unique to your needs!

How can I prevent acne scars from returning?

Prevent acne scars by getting treatment as soon as possible! It’s best to avoid future breakouts and scarring by keeping up with treatments through routine maintenance. Not only do microneedling and resurfacing lasers eliminate scarring, but they also prevent acne and other imperfections from occurring.
