Hyperpigmentation
What Is Hyperpigmentation and What Causes it?
Hyperpigmentation is a condition that causes some areas of your skin to be visibly darker than others. The name can seem like a mouthful, but it makes a lot of sense, “hyper” means more or excessive, and “pigmentation” means color, so “hyperpigmentation” means excessive color.
This is a pretty common condition with a wide range of specific presentations, including patches or sports that look brown, black, gray, red, or even pink. Often these patches and spots aren’t uncomfortable, with no pain or itching, but they’re unsightly, and many people feel very self-conscious about their appearance when they have hyperpigmentation. Thankfully there’s a lot that can be done to help mitigate symptoms and restore the look of your skin.
Causes of Hyperpigmentation
While there are a number of underlying conditions and external factors that affect hyperpigmentation, all hyperpigmentation is ultimately caused by excessive melanin in the skin. Here is a list of some of the common underlying causes of hyperpigmentation.
- Genetics – Though it’s totally out of your control, your genetics can cause several types of hyperpigmentation, specifically freckles, moles, birthmarks, and other hyperpigmented spots.
- Adrenal disorders – conditions such as Addison’s disease can cause hormonal imbalances that affect skin pigmentation.
- Melasma – This skin condition causes spots and patchy areas of darker skin, most often on the face.
- Sun Damage – When your skin has been damaged by enough excessive sun exposure, it often results in hyperpigmentation.
- Skin Injuries – cuts, burns, blisters, acne, and so on can
Treatments Available At
Meg & Co.
LaseMD Ultra Laser Skin Resurfacing
The finely tuned LaseMD Ultra II system can treat a whole range of common aesthetic concerns with only mild discomfort. It works by stimulating the inner layers of your skin, increasing the natural regeneration of the skin, and disperses excess pigmentation. This is best paired with a complimentary cleansing treatment, such as a Hydrafacial. Since they’re both laser-based treatments, we do not recommend pairing this with a Carbon Laser Facial as this might overtax your skin.
Carbon Laser Facial
Our Carbon Laser Facial treatment is a fast, powerful aesthetic treatment favored by the Hollywood elite to give them a perfect complexion for big events and appearances. It helps even out the pigmentation of your skin in just one session and gives you a Hollywood glow.
Safety Considerations
We don’t suggest pairing multiple laser treatments in a single session, as this can cause excessive stress or damage to your skin. Additionally, it’s important to protect your laser-treated skin from the sun for about a week after treatment, using sunblock and/or sun-blocking clothing to protect these areas of your skin.
Maximizing Results
For the best results in reducing or eliminating your hyperpigmentation, we suggest pairing up a laser and a non-laser-based treatment. A Hydrafacial plus laser skin treatment or a carbon laser facial plus RF Microneedling will cleanse, stimulate, and regenerate your skin more effectively than any one treatment can on its own.
